It was warm morning Marcus was driving his way to work he worked in a small computer store not too far away from where he lived. Marcus enjoyed working on computers which is why he got a computer science degree along with his bachelor’s degree in college. Marcus parked his car outside the shop he worked at and he began to head inside. When he got inside he noticed the shop was quieter than usual he began to look around and notice his latest work on a computer someone sent in.
The computer was sent in by a man last week he was having problems getting it to work, so Marcus agreed to work on it. When Marcus hooked up the computer he immediately noticed the problem the computer had viruses affecting its performance he simply could not erase the viruses with an anti-virus program he need to wipe everything on the hard drive, and erase everything and set the computer back to the way it was. The job was simple, but he knew that the person would most likely get these viruses again sometime later, so after clearing the hard-drive he installed an anti-virus program in it, as long as the man kept up with this program, and used it weekly, along with upgrading it he should not have any problems.
It was then his co-worker Jack cam in for work Jack was a tall man standing around 6’3 he wore a simple pair of black dress pants and a white shirt to go with it. “Morning Marcus you’re still working on that computer?” asked Jack “I’m just finishing up on it anything new?” Marcus replied. “No, nothing much” Jack replied. The day went fast as Marcus got off of work he received a phone call.
“Hello?” asked Marcus “Hey Marcus I making headway on a big discovery this could be a breakthrough in computers, and robotics” the voice could barley contain its excitement the voice was from Marcus’s old college teacher whom taught him computer science. “It sounds like you’ve almost completed the experiment Harold.” Marcus replied. “I’m on my way.”
Marcus arrived at Harold’s house he knocked on the door the door opened revealing Harold. Harold stood about 6 feet he wore a light blue long shirt with a tie and black pants. Harold let Marcs in he led Marcus into the computer testing room. The room had 2 computers working there were various wires and circuits hooking up to one another. Harold walked over to what looked like a laptop and a large circuit board.
“This is a Cyberdeck” Said Harold. “It is used to put our minds inside the computer basically we can download our minds into the computer and copy them into AI with this with this breakthrough in science we can create artificial limbs that move and enter the virtual would of the computer.” “Wow how exactly does it work?” Marcus asked “I have this cyberdeck hooked up to the computer on the desk we put these headphones on” he reached into the drawer revealing a pair of headphones but they have jacks on the end of them.
“We hook these into our ears and the cyberdeck allowing us to go into the mainframe of our computers.” Harold explained “I have not built a way to get out by yourself yet so one person has to stay and let the other know through messaging the person outside the computer.” “So, you want me to go first?” Marcus asked “No I will go first I think it is best that I will go, we don’t know what will happen if one of us go.”
Harold hooked the jack into the cyberdeck and sat down into the chair and put the headphones on “Flip the red switch the cyberdeck.” said Harold. Marcus flipped the red switch and looked at his former college teacher. Harold immediately passed out Marcus went over to the computer the cyberdeck was hooked in he saw a message on the screen reading “Can you red the messages on the screen? If you can just use the keyboard to the computer to reply.” Marcus typed “yes” into the keyboard “The experiment is a success.”
“What do you see?” Marcus typed “I don’t see much, it seems like I am on a grid.” Replied Harold he began to move on the grid like board he continued to walk until he noticed a cube it was orange and it was about the size of a phone booth. He looked at it closely it had a keypad on it and the screen was asking for a password. “I wonder if it is the password for my computer” Harold thought Harold typed in the password granting him access the phone booth like cube opened revealing barcodes Harold touched the barcodes and the barcodes caused him to have a vision he saw a few of the many thing on his computer. “Amazing” He commented.
“What happened?” Marcus typed “I’m picking up information from my own computer.” Replied Harold he continued walking on the grid like squares he eventually noticed an alarm go off Harold looked around frantically and he saw a small robot like creature with a turret underneath it. Harold immediately ran in the opposite direction the turret was heading. “Get me out of here now.” Harold said in a panic “What should I do? What’s going on?” questioned Marcus.
“I don’t have much time to explain, but I believe my anti-malware programs are looking for me. In order to get me out you have to make an exit for me by uploading me back into my body use the keyboard and mouse to look for recently downloaded programs you should be able to find me easily.” Explained Harold Marcus clicked the download list and looked at the recently downloaded programs he saw something marked with barcode numbers and clicked it to upload.
Harold was seen by the drone it started to open fire on him Harold continued to run, but the drone hit him in the leg causing him to fall he screamed in pain, and suddenly he felt getting sucked out of a tube much like a water slide. Harold opened his eyes and looked at himself for injury he seemed fine and he too the headphones off. Marcus switched the cyberdeck off and looked at Harold “Are you okay” he asked “I’m fine I almost got deleted by my own anti-malware program” Harold sighed. He then stood up to get himself some water to calm down, but he immediately fell.
Marcus looked at Harold and asked “What’s wrong?” Harold grunted and pushed himself to his right knee, but when he tried to stand he noticed that the feeling in his left leg was gone completely. Harold realized that the drone took his leg. The drone hit me when I was running, it hit me in the left leg before I escaped.” he said in shock. “So you are say what ever happens to you in the computer will carry over into the real?” asked Marcus “Yes I’m afraid so, so in worse case scenario if you were to die inside the computer your body is nothing more than a mindless husk.”
